Sai
Farms
Sai Farms - Hampapura is located amidst
the paddy fields of KR Nagar and on the bank of river Cauvery in the vicinity
of the village Hampapura. A five minute drive from KR Nagar and a km off the
Mysore Hassan NH.
Sai Farms is a one hectare farm in which
Natural farming techniques are practiced.
Minimum tilling is done only to grow Paddy and Ragi for self sustenance.
Companion planting techniques have been practiced. Intercropping of Silver Oak with Toor plants
as both a wind break and as a nitrogen provider is practiced. Alley or row planting from East to West is
done for optimum usage of Sun light and warmth.
Within this beautiful environ a Shirdi
Sai Baba temple is erected. The temple
was constructed keeping in mind the need for meditation and research in many
areas like Astrology, Philosophy, Science, Mathematics, Pranayama and so on.
We in Sai Farms believe in simple living. The farm hosts a Desi Cow (Amrit Mahal) and
two desi heifers (a Malnad Gidda and a Hallikar) and two German Shepherds as of
now. The natural manure generated from
the Cows goes into the farm and the naturally grown grass is fed to the Cows
(not hybrid grass).
In this way the farm is already self
sufficient with regard to growing grass for the Cows and gets back the manure
needed.
Adjacent to the farm a 14 acre evergreen lake
bustles with activity. There are many species of birds in and around this lake.
Talking about the wildlife around Sai
Farms, we get to see about a 100 species of birds and a few mammals. Few common birds are : Peafowls, Phesant
Tailed Jacanas, Bronze Winged Jacanas, Coots, Moor Hens, Red Wattled Lapwings,
King Fishers, Whistling Ducks, Cotton Pygmy Gooses, Spot Billed Ducks, Painted
Snipes, Jack Snipes, Partridges, Quails, Red Rumped Swallows, Stints, River
Terns, Ibises, Fan Tails, Ioras, Munias, Weaver Birds, Eagles, Harriers, Kites,
Shrikes, Coucals, Water Hens and many more.
Mangooses, Jungle Cats, Snakes and other animals are also around.
Exotic birds like the Glossy Ibis, Spot
Billed Pelicans, Amandava Amandava (Lal
Munia), Greater Spotted Eagles, Montagu’s Harriers, Ringed Plovers, Black
Winged Stilts are visitors in the Monsoon.
River cauvery flows in its magnificience.
We boast of a cultural mix of both North
and South India. It reflects in our
cuisine too.
Our breakfast is sometimes made up of
Idli’s and Sambar with spicy chutney on one day and on the other it will be of
Paratha’s, achar, bhujia and chai.
Lunch is one which is more
interesting. We have a mix every day. For
instance, if we have a South Indian Rasam then we will have a North Indian
Subzi like Aalu methi, Aalu Pyaaz, Gobi Matar, Aalu Shimla mirch or so for
sure. Assorted rice mixes like Sweet corn fried rice, Vegetable fried Rice,
Jeera Rice with the selected raitas like the boondhi raita, mixed raita with
tomato and onion or a simple cucumber raita defines the main course.
If the main course is of North Indian
with Kadi chawal and a North Indian Subzi then it will surely end with a South
Indian Sweet dish like the Sakrepongal (Sweet Rice Dish – particulary of the
Iyengar Brahmins) or the Payasam (made of either rice or khus khus with lots of
milk and grated coconut).
A glass of butter milk completes the
lunch.
A few days from now we will have our own
farm produces like Rice, Ragi, Milk and Ghee.

This thought came to us when we were
travelling in Kerala. There is a dearth of good Vegetarian hotels and makes it
difficult for bikers and tourists to find a decent place. The situation is
somewhat same in and around our place.
Our moto is to cater to bikers and other
travelers who travel through our place (KR Nagar) to be able to get access to
good vegetarian homemade food which will be both hygienic and authentic.
So now we welcome travelers to come over
and have breakfast/lunch/snacks and also take the blessings of Sai Baba, but
with prior notice.
